Critical Commentary

“No one would dare say that these Salmos para migrantes are to be read only in terms of the Chicano experience.  Although they do spring from it, they surpass its specificity to become a symbolic text for a wider readership. “

From the Introduction to Five Poets of Aztlán. Ed. Santiago Daydí-Tolson. Binghamton: Bilingual Press/Editorial Bilingüe. 1985.

(“This irrefutable destiny that has burdened with anguish contemporary philosophy is, for Alfonso Rodríguez, no less than for other poets like Machado and Borges, a value of support.  The silence of God is not for us a hoax but, on the contrary, a strength. Patience, resignation, loyalty.  And meanwhile, we must sharpen our vision and read in the secret unfolding of that Scripture.  We must tune our hearing and recognize in the telling silence, the contemplated Voice, the one that sooner or later will answer us:  ‘Do not fear, my grace will sustain you.’”)

Carlos Cortinez, From the Prólogo (Prologue) of Levantando la palabra: Buenos Aires: Ayala Palacio Ediciones Universitarias. 1991.

(“The great contradiction of time, Rodríguez points out, is that on passing over things and converting them into remembrances what is remembered acquires a greater radiance.  Between the hour and the place—José Carlos Becerra dixit—is a distance only salvageable by memory which is ingenuity and, moreover, poetry.  The point of departure of the author (memory) is thus converted into a port of arrival (the poem) where ‘the water flows but the riverbed remains.’”)

(“Thanks to the magical, genuine word of Alfonso Rodríguez, the reader is not a simple spectator that observes passively and coldly those beings that come and go, but participates in that fear, joy, hope, dangers, deceptions and disillusionments that encourage all those that cross the other border or that already live there.”)
