1979 Rantoul Press, newspaper Christmas writing contest for his poem “Sleigh Ride in Illinois;” 1984 Colorado University poetry contest for his poem “One Year of Grace;” 1984 Poetry Forum’s contest for his master’s thesis Where the River Flows, a collection of 55 poems; 1998 Poetry Forum’s chapbook contest for Dancing Bears; 2010 his 5,000 word paper (written in English) on Teaching English Creatively, received the Shandong Province Prize for excellent thesis at the Symposium on Foreign Language Teaching, in China. While teaching at Jining University at Qufu City, in Shandong Province the University translated his poem “Living Inside Confucius Wall” into Mandarin and published it in the school newspaper. Garrison Keillor read his poems four times on his radio broadcast “The Writer’s Almanac.”
